Better than the Fruit of the Month Club

Jul 10, 2017

Can you imagine not loving citrus? Well, I can imagine one person. Marie, the mother of Raymond in the TV sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, was not a big fruit fan. You either love, don’t love or don’t know this show.

One aspect of the title character is that Ray tried to give gifts – he really tried. However, his parents were not the best at receiving them. The tone for this shtick was set in the pilot. If you’re interested in what could actually stop Marie from talking, check the clip! But I digress. That’s what I do.

Among my favorite scents are citrus. Even the colors are happy. Orange oranges, yellow lemons, various shades of grapefruit are the first that come to mind. As they are known by their Latin names, the Genus and species … Citrus sinensis, Citrus limon, Citrus paradisii, Citrus nobilis … Wait, what’s that last one? Red Mandarin. Not a citrus that comes to mind immediately.

a fruit, it’s also known as a mandarin orange. As an essential oil, it is very similar to tangerine. I had recently studied Bay Laurel essential oil, which is also known by its Latin name of Laurus nobilis. I tried to find out why nobilis was chosen as the species name for both Bay Laurel and Red Mandarin. Apparently choosing species names is a closely guarded secret. I researched and all I came up with is that nobilis means noble – which I (and probably you) already knew. But they are among the essential oils that blend well together – probably because of their nobility.

J Red Mandarin has been nobly standing in the wings of the stage, waiting for me to stop yammering and introduce her. So here she is … Red Mandarin! (Applause) Red Mandarin, please tell us about yourself. “Thank you, Lori. There’s so much to tell! I have a sweet aroma and everyone seems to love me – especially parents of little children. I help calm them down but, as Brenda Wright mentioned about her young grandchildren, ‘without squelching their energy or enthusiasm for life.’ “I LOVE children! When it’s bedtime, I can be part of a bath or in a diffuser to help them relax. If they have tummy trouble, flatulence, constipation, I can help relieve those too. And mommies-to-be might have anxiety – just put me in a diffuser and let me help calm you down. “I’m non-toxic and non-irritating – well, maybe a bit photo toxic if your skin is pale or sensitive.

Speaking of skin, teenagers like to have me around if they have acne or other skin-related issues – even if their skin is sensitive. “I’ve talked about children, but I can help people of all ages, in all the ways I’ve already mentioned. Mild muscle spasms? I can help relieve them, along with the pain and inflammation. I have other anti- properties too. Antiseptic, antioxidant and antidepressant – who doesn’t feel happier when they smell citrus?” Wow! Take a bow, Red Mandarin! 👏👏👏
